Why Prompt Engineering Get This Much Hype?

Before we get into the topic, a big thanks to my new followers (Actually the 2 people); even though I started this blog a few days back, I’m happy that, in some way, my writing helps to get your attention! Great, thanks, buddies. I will try to provide more information, statistics, a little bit of funny experience, and a few K-drama narrations via my profile. Thanks once again! Gamsahabnida (Translate to find 🤭)

Returning to the regular doing, recently, hmm, around 2 to 3 months, I’ve been getting lots of ads and suggestions regarding Prompt engineering and its growth. Wherever I turn from Instagram to Facebook, I can see the Prompt Engineering exposure, even my neighbors!!!! That’s ridiculous, actually! Is the technology developed such faster? Or are data, search histories, and watch histories being shared unknowingly??? Who knows!

So, I thought about checking on this Prompt engineering and why it gets sudden hype.

That’s the actual theme of the blog; let’s see a few more of my findings and facts about prompt engineering.

Usual question — What is Prompt Engineering?

What is Prompt Engineering?

It’s simple, like how we used to study computers; it will be termed computer engineering, where you will learn from hardware to software, programming languages, etc. Likewise, I believe Prompt Engineering will have a computer engineering base, too. How?

Computer = AI

So you need to code, write syntax or commands to access the AI. That’s what prompt engineering is about. Just as computer engineering has different sections that need to be learned, prompt engineering also has different sections like:

  1. Writing prompts, i.e., input for AI models.
  2. Structuring the text, i.e., the proper format where AI can reply precisely to the input.
  3. Simplifying the Prompt, i.e., instructing the AI models to perform tasks.

I can understand what you all are looking for. AI is all about NLP; why she didn’t mention it?

No worries, I’m going to talk about that. As everyone knows, NLP is Natural Language Processing; as the name implies, it’s just a natural way of giving instructions to the AI so that it can complete the task.

It might sound simple, right?

But nope!

It’s the biggest task.

Why is Prompting not easy?

Why is Prompting not easy?

See, I’m a mother of a kid, and he is now four years old, he is mischievous, funny, tough to handle, and at the end of the day, he will follow my instructions! It took four whole years, and still, I’m trying to improve him, and it’s all my mother’s duty.

The same scenario applies to prompting, too,

“Imagine a scenario where you will be handling an AI model (Just like a newborn baby); you will be giving instructions to the AI model every time so that the AI model can start to understand your thoughts, ideas, and tasks. That’s what the prompting is about.”

It might look simple, but I believe raising a baby and the AI model are the same.

Simply put, “ Prompt Engineering is a bridge between a human’s Idea and the Machine’s Outcome.

Types of Prompts

Types of Prompts

So you know what’s prompt, why it’s not easy to handle. Let’s see the types of prompts, with examples, so that you can understand better!

  1. Instructional Prompt — Eg) List 5 renewable resources
  2. Fill in the Blank Prompt — Eg) The capital of India is ____
  3. Multiple choice Prompt — Eg) Which color is the primary color: A) Orange B) Brown C) Red
  4. Comparison Prompt — Eg) Pros and Cons of Olev Buses and gasoline buses.
  5. Opinion Prompt — Eg) What is your opinion about Demonetisation?
  6. Argumentative Prompt: Eg) Argue whether AI positively or negatively impacts the market.
  7. Imaginative Prompt — Eg) Write a story about a Selfish giant, where you need to act as a Selfish giant.
  8. Problem-Solving Prompt — Eg) Solve the equation 2x+y = 25, and find the value of Y.
  9. Clarification Prompt — Eg) Can you elaborate on the concept of OLEV and its Vehicles?
  10. Prediction Prompt — Eg) Predict the 2026 Football World Cup winner.
  11. Definition Prompt — Eg) Define the term ‘Conductor’ in Electrical Engineering term.
  12. Analytical Prompt — Eg) Analyze the growth of AI tools for the past three years.
  13. Summary Prompt — Eg) Summarize the key events in the IPL 2023
  14. Interpretation Prompt — Eg) Interpret the graph showing the correlation between AI prompts and AI tools Keywords.
  15. Hypothetical Prompt — Eg) What would be the consequences if humans could live on the Moon?
  16. Historical Prompt — Eg) Explain the causes and consequences of the Industrial Revolution.
  17. Personal Reflection Prompt — Eg) Share a significant life lesson you’ve learned and how it has influenced your decisions.
  18. Technical Prompt — Eg) Describe the function and layers of the OSI model.” (Still, I remember my first presentation in my college days on this OSI model 🤭 hehe)
  19. Ethical Prompt — Eg) “Discuss the ethical implications of genetic engineering in humans.”
  20. Suggestion Prompt — Eg) “Offer suggestions for improving environmental sustainability in urban areas.”

I have summarised the possible prompting techniques here; combining and mixing these prompts allows you to get the desired output. Still, if you need to know how to do effective prompts, don’t worry. I have written a simple guide about Art Prompts; it might help you if your prompting is on AI Image generation.

When does Prompt Engineering get the hype?

When does Prompt Engineering get the hype?

Now, we came to the actual reason for this blog: why all of a sudden PE get this much hype?

Ever since ChatGPT came to light, the reach of Prompt engineering has become high. For simple research about this, check the Google trends below,

You can all know ChatGPT was launched on 30th November 2022; at that time, check the prompt engineering keyword reach (Worldwide).

Google Trends — Prompt Engineering

I’m not saying it’s because of ChatGPT. Even if you ask me about the AI tools, before, I’m not sure about it and how it works.

As I have a handful of experience in handling AI writing assistants, AI Image generators, AI Video creators, and even AI website builders, I’m like at a Super Pro level. (For a namesake 😂)

My interception is,

  1. After ChatGPT, the knowledge about the NLP and GPT versions becomes more evident.
  2. Because of the nature of prompting used on ChatGPT, many people search for prompt engineering.
  3. If you know how to write a prompt, you can just ace in your game. (Maybe the above types of prompting can help you.)
  4. ChatGPT is not the only AI-powered language model; there are more like Chatsonic, Writesonic, AISEO, Copymatic, Jasper, Bing AI, Google Bard, and many more.

Everyone knows about Google Bard. The reach of Google Bard was also in hype after the ChatGPT. However, due to some syntax error in the testing stage, the Google bard gives incorrect answers, and that reflects bigger on Google’s stock!

On the whole, it was fixed, and now Google Brad is also a competitor for ChatGPT.

Getting to know about prompt engineering is interesting, and you can also start to learn about it if your field of work is somewhat related to AI.

Now, another wondering question — Are Prompt Engineers still in demand?

Of course! In the upcoming days, everything will become automated. So, compared to human intervention, AI will take up almost 70% of their work. Still, I’m not saying AIs will replace humans. What I mean is if you know how to handle those tiny little AIs, you can stay competitive in this world.

Final Thought

Using AI for your work will always reduce your workload. However, if you ask, “Is this authentic?” I’m not sure. At the end of the day, everything AI creates is a plagiarized piece of work just by analyzing the datasets it’s trained on, so in some way, your data is already used somewhere. So, the authenticity is lower compared to human work.

Nowadays, the rise of writers is huge, mainly because of AI writing assistants. Finding authentic, plagiarism-free, and raw content on the internet is hard. It has a significant impact. The ability to think outside the box becomes a big question mark.

Still, these Prompt engineers always stay out of the box to provide different possibilities and terms that AI models can understand. So these hypes are valid, actually. That’s the wrap-up for today.

Now, tell me the funny Prompt you have used on AI-language models in the comment section; let’s laugh at each other for the amateur things. Life is all about being immature and learning new things; let’s learn together and explore more. Signing off… tata.. byebye….
